Welcome in Flevoland, the most unique and youngest province in the Netherlands! Emerging from the former Zuiderzee, Flevoland is a true masterpiece of Dutch hydraulic engineering and innovation. Here you will find modern cities, beautiful landscapes and space. Everything is new here and that makes this province so special.

How was Flevoland formed?

Flevoland, a province that literally rose from the water, represents one of the most ambitious land reclamation projects in the world. Once covered by the turbulent waves of the Zuiderzee, this region was transformed by the visionary decisiveness of Dutch engineers and hydraulic engineers through the Zuiderzee project. The construction of dykes and the reclamation of polders created new land, which would eventually form the province of Flevoland. Today, Flevoland is known for its modern cities and space. Flevoland lays about 5 metres below NAP (Normal Amsterdam Level). NAP is the average sea level in the Netherlands.

Bit by bit

Between 1936 and 1942, the Northeast Polder was created, which is where you now find the municipalities of Noordoostpolder and Urk. Every spring it is beautifully blooming here with all kinds of tulip fields. And Urk is the place to go for the tastiest fish in the whole province.

Between 1950 and 1957, Eastern Flevoland was formed, where Lelystad and Dronten are now. In Lelystad, for example, you will find Bataviastad, where you will find more than 250 international fashion brands to shop.

Last of all, Southern Flevoland was formed between 1959 and 1968. This is where you will find Almere and Zeewolde. These municipalities have also grown considerably since then. Almere now has over 225,000 inhabitants.
