Almere's social history begins in November 1976 when the first residents of Almere were given the keys to their dream single-family house with a garden. This happened in the brand-new Almere Haven district. A year later, the first Almere baby was born. The first companies also settled in business park De Vaart. From then on, Almere was no longer just for living but also for working. In 1980, the first inhabitants reported to the capital Almere Stad and again four years later in Almere Buiten. That's also when Almere officially became a municipality.
The total area of Almere is 248.8 km2 and has 211,742 inhabitants (1 February 2020). Almere is the 8th largest city in the Netherlands by population, slightly less than Groningen and Tilburg. The city is growing fast as it is a young city with plenty of space. Over 400,000 homes will be needed in the region over the next 30 years. Almere has been asked to provide space for some new 60,000 homes.
Almere is a city in the province of Flevoland, centrally located in the Netherlands. The city is located along the A6 motorway and close to the A27.
Almere and Flevoland still consisted of water (IJsselmeer) in 1940. The entire province was created by reclamation, making it the largest artificial island in the world. Almere lies about 5 metres below sea level. The first Almere residents moved in in 1976.
Almere is easy to reach from all over the country. There are 6 stations in total, spread throughout Almere. From Amsterdam Centraal, you can be in Almere within 20 minutes. Utrecht Centraal is 45 minutes away by Sprinter. There are also excellent connections from the East. From Zwolle, you can be at Almere Centrum station within 45 minutes. Within Almere, you can get around just fine with Allgo's bus network. Almere is also easily accessible by car. It is located directly on the A6 and close to the A27.
On the edge of Almere Centrum station, more than 130,000 square metres of office space will rise where the World Trade Center is also located in the Carlton: an unmissable skyscraper no less than 120 metres high and 32 floors.
Almere consists of 51.9% land and 48.1% water. This is also why there is so much to do on and around the water. You can ask across Almere, water ski, canoe, but also have fun on one of the many city beaches.
