The first church in Almere was opened in 1979: de Goede Rede on the Kerkgracht. The church is not only used for church services. It regularly hosts concerts by Goede Rede Concerten. Classical music added. This makes the church more than a religious building: it is a stage for encounters and art. The church stands at the beginning of the Kerkgracht. This canal refers to Amsterdam's canals.

De Roef was completed in 1976 and was a multifunctional centre at the time. The building included a restaurant, pub, theatre and church hall. People came together here, which was much needed at the time. This created togetherness and entertainment. Not only was the town new, so were the people.

The centre of Almere Haven has several layers. As you walk down the shopping street, you see housing above you, called the Upper Walk. Between 1977 and 1982, the famous Rotterdam architectural firm Van den Broek and Bakema designed this part of Almere Haven. No cute little stepped gables here, but long blocks and clean lines, modernist and international.

The Havenkom lock is the city's only operated lock. The four other locks in Almere operate on self-service, but a lock master is still active here. This lock is 2.50 metres high and can be used free of charge.
