Behind Station Centrum 1 is the Almere l'Hermitage office complex, which includes de Carlton Tower (World Trade Centre), along with two other buildings. At 120 metres, the Carlton is the tallest building in the city. It therefore has an important function as a landmark.
Most eye-catching are the fire red coloured vertical aluminium ribs, which decorate the glass facades in different patterns. Towards the top, the pattern becomes more transparent. The building stands on a slab-shaped base and consists of three volumes: a tall 32-storey central section flanked by two lower volumes of six and 12 storeys respectively. On Busplein is a high entrance with slender white columns; on P.J. Oudweg 4 is a low entrance with black columns. The plinth provides space for catering and retail facilities. By conceiving the building with its rectangular ground form and great height as a coulisse building, it functions as a logical boundary behind which the city centre reveals itself. This building houses the WTC, which was previously housed in the 1999 Alnovum (P.J. Oudweg 1) by Benthem Crouwel Architects.
