Premiere: Nothing Beats Reality

"We all love the drama" Reality star Maria Tailor makes her theatre debut After years of being herself in reality shows, Maria Tailor now puts herself in someone else's shoes. In the theatre show 'Nothing Beats Reality', she explores the art of acting. The show can be seen on 11 and 12 December in Kunstlinie, Almere.

Reality star Maria Tailor, known from 'The Real Housewives of Amsterdam', among others, and artistic director of Suburbia, Eva Line de Boer, bring together two completely different worlds: reality TV and theatre. Ostensibly, theatre and reality TV, and their audiences, are miles apart. But aren't we all looking for that moment when you hold your breath, become totally absorbed in it and hope for reconciliation or conflict? "We all love the drama," says Maria. "Going to the theatre with Maria is refreshing," says Eva Line. "She questions our unwritten rules in a disarming way; a relief in a world that can seem inaccessible to people outside the theatre bubble. With this project, I hope for the best of both worlds: the imagination of theatre combined with the immediacy of reality, with which Maria addresses her audience."

Whereas as a reality personality, Maria Tailor is practised to be the best version of herself, for 'Nothing Beats Reality' she immerses herself in role-playing. Maria previously took an acting course, but people did not see an actress in her because she would be too commercial. "After all that reality, I need depth. I want to learn to transform into someone far away from me and touch people with that," Maria says. Maria's quest is therefore a plea for empathy. By taking a seat in someone else' de realiteit , she will soon pass a master's test in transformation. Director Eva Line de Boer and writer Marieke Giebels delve into the theatre repertoire to create the role of Maria's life from various iconic plays. One that is far away from her yet confrontingly close. While Maria shines and plods along, Belinda van der Stoep plays the character Maria Tailor.

For her role research, she gets under Maria's skin and blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality. Do not expect a classic performance, but an arena where theatre tradition and reality TV glamour come together.
