Carmen (must die)

A new Carmen is rising: that of theatre-maker Giovanni Brand. In 'Carmen (must die)', with a hefty dose of humour, guts and musical fire, he dissects Bizet's Roma-hostile opera, which has been drawing packed theatres for a century and a half. Brand creates an entirely new performance and cuts through the clichéd image of the unpredictable, fiery, lustful and dangerous people who made Bizet great.

We follow Dimitri, who is the first Roma actor to play the role of Carmen. During rehearsals, he soon discovers that he is not only performing that role, but is himself trapped in the stereotype of the Roma people. In a slapstick-like tour de force of scenes, he puts up a fight that simultaneously makes fun of the diversity debate and puts it on edge.

'Carmen (must die)' is a meeting of opera and theatre, in which original arias clash head-on with flamenco and in which humour rubs past pain. There is only one outcome: Carmen must die. For real now. For lovers of opera. For haters of opera. For anyone who thinks they know this story.
