2006 - Almere Centrum opened
![]()
Spring 2006 marks the official opening of Almere's city centre. With the 'curved ground level', Rem Koolhaas' world-famous architecture firm OMA is forging a hilly landscape in this ultramodern shopping mecca. Living, working and shopping are interwoven in this centre. In the lower world is space for parking - for (delivery) bikes, scooters, mopeds and cars - and for supplying the shops, while the layer above is intended for the shops, catering and residential pleasure as in De Citadel.
In this same festive year, Almere celebrates its 30th anniversary. Mayor and aldermen invite Almere residents to come and have a cake at City Hall.
During Queen's Day, Queen Beatrix visits Almere with Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima and the royal family. All festivities during the Orange party proceeded cheerfully and quietly. The Almere singer Floortje (known from Idols) sang the Almere song for the royal family that day.
