1997 - First demolition project

In 1997, the first demolition hammer hits the buildings on Schipperkade. This marks the New Town's first demolition project. The houses near het Weerwater are centrally located and have to make way for new momentum.
In the public space, the municipality of Almere places Daniel Libeskind's artwork 'Polderland Garden of Love and Fire'. Museum De Paviljoens, now in Amersfoort, later wrote about this: 'In Almere Pampus, five intersecting lines lie in the landscape like a strange script. Three narrow channels, a strip of black gravel with a sculpture of aluminium walls on top and a pedestrian path form the Land Art project Polderland Garden of Love and Fire by architect Daniel Libeskind (Lodz, Poland, 1946).'
Singer Silvia Samson sings to the council chamber for the first time with the brand-new Almere song: "Almere, city where the end never begins...city of freedom..."
