1978 - Circle Forest

| | |

In 1978, het Cirkelbos was planted, with seven circles containing straight rows of poplars, willows and alders. At the edge of the circles are beeches. Het Cirkelbos is located east of the current Overgooi district in Almere Haven. The circles can be clearly seen from above.

7 November 1978 marks the official start of construction for the Almere Stad urban district, for which resident and fellow administrator Klaas Nawijn coined the name back in 1974. Landdrost Han Lammers, Almere's administrator, walks on this sunny November day with minister Danny Tuynman and chief engineer-director of the RIJP Roel van Duin along a sandy street where Stad's first district, Stedenwijk is taking shape.

Also in this year, the Almere Advisory Council of the Public Body Zuidelijke IJsselmeer Polders(OL ZIJP) takes office for the first time. The daily board of this council consists of: Irene Visser-Thiry, Peter de Jonge, Han Lammers, Ad van der Vliet and Madelon van der Woude. Together, they form the New Town Board, as a precursor to the College of Mayor and Aldermen.
