Breathing Life

By: Michelle Wagenaar

In Michelle's mural, you can see a figure stepping through the water, heading towards Flevoland's yet-to-be-defined landscape. The waves are in tight, yet organic lanes to signify the interplay between wild nature and the "man made" aspect of Flevoland. From these waves then come various elements that in turn have to do with the province. For example, the bird and the fish symbolise the animals that are now migrating to the province due to the creation of the Wadden Island Markermeer, and the tulip is of course a reference to the many tulip fields here. Furthermore, the background with yellow lines symbolises the austere farmland that, as the text describes, is so characteristic of the province.

In other words.

In other words, this design depicts how various aspects in Flevoland have already emerged from the water as a "gift from the sea", but that at the same time there is still plenty of room to fill it in further and thus grow.
