The Equator is the backbone of Almere Buiten. A gently undulating course, it reminds the pleasantly swaying motorist of when this land was still water. In 2007, the wide central reservation between the lanes was redesigned by Boto van der Meulen. He transformed a 50-metre-wide no man's land into a three-kilometre-long park. You can feel the qualities realised here by following the winding path, which leads past seas of wildflowers, grouped by colour on small hills. It also leads from one pavilion to another for small business activities, such as an ice cream parlour, a restaurant and a snack bar. In between, red cages appear for a different sport each time, as the large inscriptions make clear: Tennis. Basketball. Skating. These are facilities that attract young people. They vitalise the previously dead strip with their inexhaustible energy. One can also spot numerous trees during that walk, some of which have a corten steel plate with a punched-out poem by poets from Almere at their feet.
