Gemaal De Blocq van Kuffeler

Gemaal De Blocq van Kuffeler is Flevoland's youngest pumping station, but one of the largest of its kind in the world. It has four identical electric motors, which collectively pump 3.2 million litres of water per minute out of the polder. Queen Juliana commissioned the pumping station on 18 October 1967, after which the pumping station drained Southern Flevoland, in seven months, on 29 May 1968.

The pumping station is named after Dr V.J.P. de Blocq van Kuffeler (1878-1963), who did important work for the Zuiderzee Works. He was vice-chairman of the Zuiderzee Council.

One of the largest pumping stations in the world
De Blocq van Kuffeler is one of the largest pumping stations in the world, measured by head and capacity. The pumping station is equipped with three emergency generators: one of 80 KVA for the pumping station's emergency power installation. And two of 1540 KVA to power two pumps of the plant if the power fails.

Poem
In 2008, gemaal De Blocq van Kuffeler was rebuilt. The four diesel engines were replaced by energy-efficient and maintenance-friendly electric motors and the pumping station was fully automated. After two years of renovation, Mayor Annemarie Jorritsma of Almere and dike grave Henk Tiesinga of Waterschap Zuiderzeeland reopened the pumping station on 28 May 2010 by unveiling four lines of poetry on the facade.

"The high speed intertwined
With the low speed warbles
In a raging water tango
Up to Lake Marker"

Do not visit
You cannot look inside the pumping station but from the outside you can see how impressive the pumping station is. The pumping station is located near visitor centre De Trekvogel from where you can take beautiful walks in the Lepelaarplassen.
