Laura van Santen and Diederik de Koning of agency La-di-da have designed a series of private homes to develop a construction method that is both economically and ecologically sound. The A-frame huis is one of four houses in this series, alongside Hietland in Achterhoek, the Dijkhuis in Strijensas and the Tiny House in Deventer. The A-frame fits into the tradition of affordable building. Instead of costly prefabricated walls, roofs and floors, the building was designed so that all parts could be easily assembled and lifted on site. Since the roof is normally the most expensive element of a house, the architects chose the A-frame model. The dimensions of the A-frame are based on the available length of SLS wood (Scandinavian Lumber Standard), which was used for the construction. The entire building is made of SLS wood, including the floor. To minimise the use of environmentally harmful concrete, only the foundation is concrete. A wooden foundation would rot due to fluctuating groundwater levels. Thus, the designers combine economic efficiency with ecological responsibility.
