Hortus

Hortus, located on the former Floriade site, is to become the green city district of the future. In the district, circularity and innovation are central. For instance, streets will be paved as little as possible, making the design climate-adaptive. Drought and heat stress are prevented as much as possible. Reused concrete is used in the public space, preferably from Almere itself. Street furniture, such as benches, is made of circular and bio-based materials. Because it is good for the environment and promotes local, sustainable economic activity.

Take a tour of the district and see what is being developed and what is already there. Among others, you will find the Flores residential tower and Aeres Hogeschool. In total, some 660 homes will be added.

The Smart Thermal Grid has been constructed in the district, a collective supply of heat and cold that does not use residual heat from waste incineration and minimises the burden on the soil. This is a clean energy supply for the future residents and other users of the green Hortus district.

Hortus will also be a car-free city district. Slow traffic takes centre stage, and the car is a guest. For Almere, this is a major move to further make the living environment pleasant, safe and healthy.
