The Martinez office tower, a beacon of modernist architecture, was completed in 2011, in the midst of the building crisis the Netherlands was in. With its height of 70 metres, the tower rose as a symbol of ambition and progress, but remained unused for a long time because of that crisis. In 2017, the tower got the chance for a second life when it was transformed from an office building into a more versatile and dynamic complex. Keeping in mind the increasing importance of multifunctional spaces in modern city centres, the tower was transformed into a 158-room hotel with luxurious spa and an exclusive business club, complete with a panoramic terrace on the 15th floor. The building is slender and airy due to its height and the use of transparent and green glass. The meandering façade allows plenty of natural light. The four linked flat disks of glass and steel come together in a central core. The airy character is reinforced by the fact that not all disks extend to the ground, but collide outwards on the second or fourth floor. Catering facilities are located in the plinth. The design brings a touch of the Zuidas to Almere.
