Short Stirling

In autumn 2020, the wreck of the Short Stirling was recovered: an English bomber that crashed into the Markermeer during World War II. The artwork was placed on the Memorial Field of the Bos der Onverzettelijken in memory of the crew.

Laura O'Neill's (1990) artwork consists of a wreckage on which a man-sized young pilot sits. The pilot is recognisable by his clothing as a World War II pilot. He faces the flagpole that stands on the memorial field, inviting current generations to commemorate. O'Neill was touched by the realisation that pilots were so young when they fought in the war. With Rise, she wants to honour their commitment during the war and their sacrifice.
