Het Weerwater was conceived by 'godfather' Teun Koolhaas. It was created by sand excavations for the A6 and the railway line and is located just north of the A6. The name refers to the re-created water. Het Weerwater is Almere's city lake, with the city centre to the north and the future Hortus district to the south. This unique area forms the green-blue heart of Almere and connects the city centre with the surrounding neighbourhoods, playing a crucial role in the city's identity. Since 2015, the municipality has been developing new plans for het Weerwater and its banks, with which the city embraces the water instead of turning its back on it. To provide attractive access to the banks, the Rondje Weerwater was created, a seven-kilometre route. This blue asphalt path passes beaches, green strips, forests, parks and experimental housing estates. A new bridge south of Lumière Park also divides the route into two laps of five and seven kilometres respectively, providing a smart connection between the banks and Hortus. In 2025, het Weerwater will be a prime location: a sporting, recreational and enjoyable place, with new green spaces around its blue heart.
