You can of course wander through the city like a typical tourist, but you can also choose to get the most out of your visit and take a tour of Almere. You can do that with or without a guide or even an audio guide. On this page you'll find an overview of the nicest tours through Almere.

City Walks

Through Tourist Information Almere, you can take a City Walk with a city guide. Almere is known for its surprising and unique urban design and neighbourhoods with a story. You will discover this diversity during one or more of the five city tours:

  • City Walk Almere Centrum: discover the urban highlights of Almere Centrum, with designs by René van Zuuk, Rem Koolhaas, Herman Hertzberger and others.
  • City Walk Regenboogbuurt: walk through Almere's most colourful neighbourhood and admire the iconic Rode Donders, yellow towerhouses, aquamarine-coloured semi-detached houses and many other must-sees.
  • City Walk Filmwijk: get to know the story behind this neighbourhood, where in 1992 architects were challenged to use their creativity and come up with innovative ideas.
  • City Walk Almere Poort: take a walk through Almere's youngest district, where there is plenty of experimentation with new designs. The best-known building is the Klokhuis, which was built in the middle of the Cascadepark, based on a TV competition.
  • City Walk Almere Haven: discover Almere's oldest city district, whose architecture is inspired by Zuiderzee towns. Walk along canals, across a market square and through neighbourhoods with courtyards and enjoy views over the Gooimeer.

Participating in a City Walk costs €7.50 p.p. and the walk takes about two hours.

Discover Almere Tour

Do you love photography and/or urban design? Then you'll want to follow the Discover Almere Tour along Almere's photo hotspots. You can follow this audio tour whenever it suits you. Download the free app and follow the route at your own pace. Along the way, photographer and Almere fan Richard Terborg will tell you all about the special buildings you will encounter, such as The Wave with its wavy facade. Of course, you will also have time for a drink on a terrace at the Grote Markt or Belfortplein along the way.

Audio tours

There are several audio tours focusing on Almere's architecture. These routes are about 2 hours and were created by Architour together with Gemeente Almere.

  • Almere City Centre: Straight through the centre which is built up in layers and contains a lot of architecture.
  • Rondje Weerwater: The Rondje Weerwater is well-known among many Almeerders and definitely recommended to walk with this audio tour.
  • Almere Duin: Discover this special neighbourhood with summer vibes and unusual buildings.
  • Almere Oosterwold: Always wanted to know more about Oosterwold, the unique and sustainable self-build neighbourhood? Then follow this tour.

Excursions and walks in Oostvaardersplassen

The Oostvaardersplassen are part of National Park Nieuw Land: the largest man-made nature reserve in the world, home to extraordinary birds, mammals and plants. Make the most of your visit and go out with a guide. Step into the Forestry Commission's forest ranger's tent, for example, who will take you in an eco-cart to his or her favourite spots. Bird lovers set their alarm early to go on an early bird walk with a guide around sunrise.
