Bambie plays Bambi – An ode to loneliness (try-out)
It was bound to happen: a show about the little deer after which the Bambie Mime Theatre Group is named. Who hasn’t been enchanted by the most famous children’s film of all time? And what is it actually about?
In Walt Disney’s version, Bambi grows up in an idyllic forest where all the talking animals are friends, and finds his purpose as a partner and father to a new generation of Bambis. But that is a heavy-handed romanticisation of the original story. In the 1923 book by the Austrian author Felix Salten, nature is cruel and Bambi is left alone. Because, in order to survive, you must learn to rely on yourself.

In its own distinctive, visual theatrical language – wildly absurd and emotionally charged – the Bambie Mime Theatre Group juxtaposes Disney-style romance with Salten-style realism. Iconic film scenes are given a new interpretation: Bambi’s adorable birth, the slapstick slip-and-slide on the ice, the death of Bambi’s mother, the hormonal discovery of love. The forest is a home into which the elements of nature intrude. Inhabited by human figures with animal instincts. In *Bambie speelt Bambi*, three individuals seek a personal answer to the question of what our ‘natural’ destiny is. And what life lessons are needed to grow up in this day and age.
