‘The Discovery of Almere’ with a discussion afterwards

Where was Almere 25 years ago? What dreams did the city’s pioneers have? And which of those dreams have now, on the city’s 50th anniversary, become a reality?

To mark Almere’s 50th anniversary, De Nieuwe Bibliotheek and Het Nieuwe Filmhuis are screening the documentary *The Discovery of Almere* by filmmaker Willem Thijssen. The film was made 25 years ago and brings the early years of Almere to life. Founding fathers, urban planners, administrators, entrepreneurs and residents talk about their ideas, ambitions and expectations for the new city.

With the benefit of hindsight, this documentary offers a unique perspective on the development of Almere. Which expectations were fulfilled? What challenges arose? And what lessons can we take from this for the future?

Following the film, there will be a discussion featuring, amongst others, filmmaker Willem Thijssen and those featured in the documentary, including the town planners, the children of the first resident and former mayor Hans Ouwerkerk. Together, they will look back on the ambitions of the past, reflect on the city as it is today and discuss the future of Almere. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
