Patsy Kroonenberg | Via Rudolphi Productions – She’s still here
Patsy Kroonenberg has created a quirky and funny show together with her late mother, Jellie Brouwer.
My mother was Jellie Brouwer. A professional question-asker.
She asked everyone the right questions. To the pet shop assistant selling seeds for the birds in the garden, to the neighbour making jam, to all the artists she spoke to on the radio programme *Kunststof*. They came in, they sat down, diagonally opposite each other, the jingle played, and she began. Her opening line, which she’d been mulling over all week.
I stayed at home. With my sisters and my father. He was cooking and the radio was on the little counter by the kitchen. As a child, I used to talk to the radio and thought it was talking back to me. Since she died, it’s been quiet.
I miss having a natter,…

I miss chatting, I miss coming home and hearing her go, “Yoo-hoo!”, I miss our gossip about famous Dutch people, I miss being able to ring her when things weren’t going well, or when they were going really well.
So I want to talk to her. And the further I get from our last conversation, the more the questions change. When do you know if you want children? How do you know if love is true love? How do you stay cheerful whilst the world is falling apart?
In *She’s Still Here*, I’ll be talking to her again. I’ll ask her all those questions, knowing that she’ll always reply with a question of her own. My mum is no longer with us, but all those interviews are still there. Whilst others may only have someone’s voicemail left, I have 2,300 hours of conversations. I can hear my mum saying ‘Hm’ forever.
