Almere's first begraafplaats is bounded by the Gooimeerdijk and the Oosterdreef. It consists of burial plots in scattered rooms on mounds. In fact, the clay soil had to be raised with sand to provide a moisture-permeable bed for the dead. The chambers are shaped like plump leaves, and are bordered by thick hedges of native plant species such as lime and hawthorn. Towards the embankment, the mounds get higher, creating a natural transition to the road above. Cycling and walking paths meander freely through the park-like layout. Those who do not wish to do so need not see the graves behind the hedges. Those who enter the rooms through the wooden fences sometimes see neat rows of graves, other times randomly scattered monuments in the grass. In terms of layout, some fields come close to the atmosphere of natural cemeteries, where the terrain indicates how the dead are allowed to lie and there are no paths along rows of graves. In the rooms there are only tall trees, no shrubs. The auditorium was designed by city architect Tjitte Tigchelaar and was inaugurated in 1979. It is possible that the whole will become a municipal monument.
