ANNO
On the Grote Markt, building ANNO stands out with a striking design language reminiscent of the 1950s. Originally designed as a Grand Café and hotel, it extends over three floors, with a layout around a spectacular atrium. ANNO is now focused on eating, drinking, dancing and staying overnight. The original Pizza Point has since been replaced by a kitchen with dishes from around the world. The façade is composed of brick in two colours, sandy and beige, in horizontal bands. On the south side, the bricks protrude ever so slightly upwards, creating an overhang that serves as a shelter for the balconies of the hotel rooms. The high atrium is bold and skylights guarantee sufficient daylighting. The floor-to-ceiling glass facades are subtly placed inwards.

In consultation with Geert Coenen, a number of changes have since been made to the shell: the former company residence has been added to the hotel; the staircase and void to the inset floor have been enlarged. A large aluminium tube stands like a sentinel in the brick outer wall, next to an added glass (smoke) cube. This project was awarded several prizes, including the prestigious NAi architecture prize.
