De Toonladder

A new housing concept for the elderly was developed with the de Toonladder. Facilities for different degrees of care were combined, so that people could move within the complex when their need for care increased. The project stands out in the neighbourhood through a palette of light, cheerful colours, with lots of yellow and blue in particular, and a bright red door here and there. On the west side, the building makes an elegant curve. The independent flats there have a front door on the outside of the curve.

The care facilities are on the inside. In the peripheral building that follows, care flats are located along galleries. Central to the spacious courtyard garden is the octagonal 'Concertmaster'. There, residents can play cards, do their laundry and relax on the terrace. On the east side of the access road connecting the complex to the neighbourhood is a series of low villas with red pyramid roofs set in greenery. These 'Quartets' each accommodate four independent living units. Two of them, the 'Minuets', are reserved for Alzheimer's patients. In the middle are a petting zoo and a unit for people with non-congenital brain injuries. The whole is a model of beautiful and varied care architecture, which is excellently embedded in the neighbourhood.
