The multifunctional Corrosia, designed as a prelude to a city hall to be developed behind it, has a wide interior street that should have opened onto a bridge to that new building. This street is still the centre of the interior, giving access to the theatre, library, restaurant, exhibition hall and spaces for relaxing. Some flats for young people have their own entrance. Two skylights protrude above the building, which takes its name from its facades made of strips of Corten steel, a material whose outer layer corrodes to a striking rust-brown colour. The 2012 renovation by Rik Lagerwaard added two towers and replaced the closed plinth at the front with glass. With that, the murals depicting bits of city history by artist Nanne Balyon disappeared. The layout with interlocking utility spaces and split-level floors has been retained. Corrosia remains a striking presence on the market square, still fully fulfilling its social and cultural function.
