Together with the Innovation Pavilion of Flevoland Province, Aeres University of Applied Sciences forms the Flevo Campus. An education and research hub in the field of innovation in food supply and urban green development. The building fits that function. It is designed as a series of flexible spaces where work, learning and research can be carried out in numerous ways. From the hall, which also houses the canteen, a staircase made of reclaimed wood leads up. On the roof, a slate room is furnished with benches and decking made of wood from old barges.
The benches stand among a huge variety of plants and trees. Above them floats a screen of slanted panels that both filter sunlight and generate energy. Two facades have hanging gardens around the windows. The plants cool the interior spaces and are watered from the roof as much as possible with rainwater. The walls here are made of biocomposite. Another exterior wall is covered with a curtain of solar panels. Materials have been reused for the floors and ceilings. The furniture consists of refurbished old stuff that looks new and fresh. The Green Lung is an energy-neutral and circular building, which, with its innovative technology, takes a significant step towards achieving healthy, sustainable architecture. Winner Circular Award 2022.
