Kunstlinie

At Esplanade 10 is De Kunstlinie, a building with a ground area of one hundred by one hundred metres. Three rectangular hall volumes rise from this base. Behind the small hall is the exhibition wing with seven daylight rooms, a feature added in 2016. The middle and large halls protrude firmly into the sky.

The spacious entrance hall houses a reception area, catering, ticket sales and museum shop. Only the theatre lobby is tall (25 metres) and accommodates a huge mural by Michael Lin, inspired by a Vlisco fabric. On the loading and unloading side of the building, visible from outside, is a muscle-white spiral. This spiral staircase, trimmed with a steel wall takes visitors to the top floor. Via de overloop, a glass air bridge then leads to the offices.

On the ground floor, SANAA created 'a city within a city'. This consists of a succession of white rooms, corridors, patios and courtyards, with many vistas. The steel load-bearing structure is ingeniously connected to the glass facades, requiring only a minimal number of pillars to provide structural support. The lightness of the structure corresponds to the atmosphere, with architectural beauty prevailing.
