“The lone star”. That is what the Liberians call the single large star that adorns their proud flag. After 34 years, the charismatic theatre director Bright Richards returned for the first time to his native Liberia, which he was forced to flee when a bloody civil war was raging. Do they still remember him? What can he still do for the country now? He takes us to places that were once important to him and shares the stories that have shaped his life.
A journey in which the present and the past intertwine, in which harrowing memories of war and the new everyday reality alternate with alienating speed. In a manner that is both confrontational and compassionate, Bright recounts the history of his country, which emerged in the wake of its history of slavery. He tries to come to terms with the brutal violence involving the use of child soldiers, and seeks hope in the powerful way in which the women of Liberia brought about disarmament and peace. A performance like a road movie in which the creators ask themselves how one can look one’s demons from the past in the eye, whether it is possible to come to terms with a war together, and how perpetrators and victims can continue to live alongside one another.
