Dood Paard – Chernobyl

Why do we humans keep getting our fingers burnt by things whose risks we cannot fully grasp? Why do people bury their heads in the sand to avoid taking responsibility for the world they create?

Dood Paard is collaborating with Tiago Rodrigues once again. He is writing *Chernobyl*, a production which, just like *Women in Troy as told by our mothers*, explores both the political and the personal.

On 26 April 1986, in the waning days of the Soviet Union, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred. The laws of physics paid no heed to the system of lies, human failings, national pride and hubris. Due to a series of human errors and ignorance, the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded, causing what was perhaps the greatest natural disaster humanity has ever endured.

‘Chernobyl’ focuses less on the technical ‘how’ and more on the human ‘why’. The performance explores humanity, nature and our environment, and confronts us with the choices that lead to disasters and the lessons we can learn from them.
