Studio SIBLING | The Coproducers – Why we decided to get a dog
‘Why we decided to get a dog’ is a vocal performance for two voices, two electric string instruments and two passenger lifts.
Drawing on interviews with queer families and Timo and Hélène’s own friendship, they perform an experimental, critical and visual deconstruction of a serenade concert. Why we decided to get a dog is an eccentric collection of serenades to chosen family: sung odes to the friends with whom you want to raise a dog, for whom you would carry a child, with whom you do want to celebrate Christmas or marry platonically. Two chosen siblings (Timo Tembuyser & Hélène Vrijdag) dream aloud about a queer counterpart to the ‘house, tree and pet’ ideal: what would such a life look like? How do you build a family outside the heterosexual infrastructure? And what does a love song sound like without a romantic motive?
