The Poezieboys – ARENDS
At ARENDS, the Poezieboys and the punk-poetic theatre group ECHO welcome you to a scant, meagre, even self-sabotaging, anything but baroque, yet playful and humorous evening exploring the life and work of poet Jan Arends. Together, they create a performance brimming with poetry, personal stories, a barrage of abuse, late-night phone calls and absurd fantasy worlds.

Jan Arends (1925–1974) was one of the most uncompromising voices in Dutch literature. His poems are austere, direct and painfully honest. He wrote about loneliness, mental anguish and the feeling of not belonging anywhere – not from a distance, but from within. His work gives a voice to those who remain unseen: the wounded, the lonely, those who struggle to fit into society. Arends was not an easy man. He could be sharp, unpredictable and difficult. At the same time, behind his anger and helplessness lay a deeply wounded and vulnerable person. Two days before his collection *Lunchpauzegedichten* was published, he took his own life.
Through poetry, stories and theatrical outbursts, Anna Schoen, Joep Hendrikx and Jos Nargy delve into his work and his world. When Arends once disrupted a general meeting of members at De Bezige Bij publishing house and nobody could calm him down, his editor asked if he would come and sit next to him and hold his hand. Arends sat down, held his hand, and calmed down. ARENDS is an exploration of how much space we can make for others – even if they are troublesome, out of place or difficult. Because when you meet someone who doesn’t fit in, do you dare to hold their hand?
