Almere is a new city located close to Amsterdam and Utrecht. You might think it might be difficult to find good vegetarian and vegan food in Almere but there are several great places where you can go. Whether it’s for a vegan breakfast, a healthy lunch or a vegetarian dinner; I’m showing you where to go in Almere.
The Black Cockatoo
When you say ‘Almere’ and ‘vegan’ in one sentence, everyone will refer you to The Black Cockatoo. This lunchroom in the city center of Almere serves some great vegan lunches. The entire menu of The Black Cockatoo is plant based, so it’s not only great for vegans but also for lactose intolerant. On the menu you’ll find a delicious granola bowl with homemade granola and coconut yogurt, smashed avocado toast, hummus toast and almond butter apple toast. They also have the vegan versions of two typical Dutch warm dishes: Kroket and Kapsalon (fries with vegan shoarma). They also have platters to share and sweets. Besides their homemade pies and cakes they also serve the vegan and refined sugar free treats from Sharp Sharp in Rotterdam. They also have a separate kids menu.
A lot lesser known is Neighbours Kitchen. And it’s a real shame, as the food is delicious! It’s a short drive or bike ride South of the city center of Almere but it’s worth the trip. Neighbours Kitchen serves a completely vegan menu with Caribbean influences. They have many gluten-free options that are clearly marked on the menu. Neigbours Kitchen has an all-day brunch and a noon to 5pm lunch. In the evenings they serve several bites that you can share with your company. We went for a healthy and colorful sourdough toast with red beet hummus, avocado slices, ‘feta cheese’, pomegranate seeds, cucumber and seeds. After that we shared the Caribbean crispy ‘flensje’ (thin pancake), it was topped with baked banana, coconut, cacao nibs and pecans.
The Boathouse is such a beautiful and romantic location. To see the sun set in the water from your table is reason enough to book a table at the BoatHouse. But you can add a stylish interior and great menu to your reasons to go. They don’t have many vegetarian or vegan options, but the ones that they have are really good. The vegetarian options are clearly marked on the menu and most vegetarian dishes can be made vegan too. I went for the watermelon, strawberry, feta cheese and pistachio nuts as a starter. For the main dish I had the couscous salad served with crispy polenta, green asparagus, almonds and caramelized red onion. We were quite full after this so we didn’t have room for the delicious desserts on the menu. Luckily the have a great option at the BoatHouse for those who are too full for dessert but do crave something sweet; a coffee or tea with some home-made chocolates.
IJspressi is an ice cream shop and espresso bar in the city center of Almere. They have delicious ice creams with flavors like Oreo cookies and honey-pumpkin. They have several vegan flavors on offer including fruit sorbets. The ice cream flavors change regularly but when I was there they had a delicious vegan chocolate and fruit ice cream. Besides ice cream cones you can also order an ‘ijsbonbon’ which is a chocolate filled with ice cream. We went for a mocha and a strawberry one, and they also had a vegan ijsbonbon with dark chocolate.
IJspressi serves a small ice cream instead of a cookie with your coffee or tea, and if you sit at the big table in the back there’s a jar with conversation starters. These small things really set IJspressi apart from other ice cream shops.
