Tuinhuis

Many senior citizens, the pioneers of yesteryear, would like to continue living in Haven. To encourage them to leave their single-family homes, the Tuinhuis with 27 social rental flats was built. The urban densification in the predominantly 'village-like' Haven was very welcome. It brought metropolitan allure, executed architec- tonically beautifully and well detailed. The architects prove that a building made of old-fashioned gravel concrete can appeal. Washed gravel concrete has been given a modern twist and offers surprising solutions. By consistently carrying it through in the support elements, floating balcony corners and round forms, it pleases the eye. Minimal footprint combined with maximum freedom. Every room opens onto the wraparound balcony. The building has a concrete, self-supporting structure of terraces and is clad in wood. The columnar shape is reflected in balcony boxes, niches and planters. The residents take care of minor maintenance, management and cleaning, thus retaining control over their living environment. The interior has style elements that refer to the Amsterdam School. The colour palette of soft yellow railings, black tiling and panelling and grey ceilings with sound-absorbing paper cellulose are stylish. By contrast, the typography is twenty-first-century; giant numerals identify the flats.
