De Voetnoot consists of three cube-shaped parts. The lowest part is the theatre auditorium located in the middle at the back. The part that has an entrance on Stadhuisplein has two floors and the one with an entrance on the other side has three. From the two angled entrance areas at the front, corridors run diagonally into the building. They end at the theatre hall in the middle. A corridor is situated on the main axis between the two higher sections and manifests itself on the outer façade with a slight bulge. The internal structure of spaces of consistently the same size is independent of the grey facades, which fold around it like a coat. This design allows the interior space to be changed as needed. Inside, the colours blue and yellow were used to distinguish the building sections. De Voetnoot is a perfect example of eighties architecture, when sustainability and flexibility were very important. Designer Tjitte Tigchelaar, who worked as Almere's city architect for a long time, made his most important statement for the city with it.
