Malmöhus
The first multi-storey apartment building built in a timber construction in the Netherlands is Malmöhus in Almere. This project is 1 of the early textbook examples of sustainable housing construction.
Malmöhus is an apartment building for starter households and is located in an area on the Equator intended for special projects. This project shows that four storeys and floors with a span of over 7 metres can be realised in timber. Timber frame construction is usually only used in ground-level housing. Stacked timber frame construction places extra demands on sound attenuation between floors. Even the lift shafts are made of wood. This has been met here in a careful and innovative way. A beautiful inner garden has been laid out with northern-style planting. The two-part sculpture 'Doors' by Cor Litjens symbolises the residents' stage of life. The layout also offers opportunities for young people to start a home-based business.
