The Red Thunders are part of the architecture in Almere Buiten.

Architect Liesbeth van der Pol started designing the three well-known buildings along the A6 in 1994. 4 years later, in 1998, the construction of these special towers was completed. This was the last project of the Regenboogbuurt, the neighbourhood presented at the BouwRAI in 1994.

Why red?

The Rooie Donders were inspired by the white grain silos in northern France. They were originally going to be that colour too, but because they were to be located in the Regenboogbuurt , the municipality of Almere did not consider it suitable because white is not a colour. Subsequently, the residential towers had different colours on the drawing board, but approval only came when the bright red colour was chosen. It contrasts beautifully with the green fields in front and the blue skies above. In Liesbeth's watercolours, the towers were still blue, red and yellow.
