The pupil (12+)

Daan (12) is gradually taken in at his football club by his trainer Ries (35) and repeated sexual abuse follows. Daan's felt need to keep the secret causes his behaviour to change and he increasingly withdraws. When the truth comes to light, Daan is overwhelmed by shame and faces uncomfortable and sometimes cruel reactions from those around him.

Loosely based on the autobiographical book Your eyes betray you by Steven van der Hoeven.

Daan the third of four football-loving brothers, looks up to his coach Ries (35). Ries gains increasing influence over Daan's life. He pulls Daan into a secret, forbidden world of adults and that is the beginning of repeated sexual abuse. Daan begins to behave differently, playing truant from school and distant towards his family and friends.

When other boys report abuse by Ries, Daan becomes confused as he discovers he is not the only one. Despite Ries admitting to the abuse, Daan denies until he cannot. He is embarrassed. His parents are shocked and their well-meaning words only cause Daan more grief and distance. He also struggles at the football club. The smart and strong Daan now feels like a loser. In the end, Daan breaks down.
