Entre Dos – ‘A tribute to tango!’

A lively afternoon concert featuring Adriaan Dropsie on guitar and Karin Jochems on flute. An intimate performance in the chapel. Preceded by a carillon concert.

Programme notes

The tango originated at the end of the nineteenth century in the working-class neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires, where immigrants from Europe were trying to build a new life. In cafés, small theatres and dance halls, a diverse range of musical influences came together: African rhythms, indigenous music, the Cuban habanera, Spanish flamenco and European folk music. From this rich blend, a new, distinctive musical style emerged: the tango.

What began as street music grew into an international phenomenon in the early decades of the twentieth century. Originating in Argentina, the tango took Europe by storm, becoming popular even in the salons of Paris and at European courts.

In ‘Homage to the Tango!’, Entre Dos presents a varied programme featuring both traditional tangos and Tango Nuevo. Music by Astor Piazzolla, the genre’s great innovator, is interspersed with original compositions by guitarist Adriaan Dropsie. Together, they pay tribute to a musical style that uniquely combines passion, melancholy and a zest for life.

The musicians

Entre Dos
Flutist Karin Jochems and guitarist Adriaan Dropsie form the duo Entre Dos. For many years, they have been performing a repertoire that combines their own compositions with works by composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Joaquín Rodrigo, Francesco Molino, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Jacques Ibert. The combination of flute, alto flute, guitar and octave guitar creates a warm and versatile timbre.

Adriaan Dropsie studied classical guitar at the Brabant Conservatoire under Balthazar Benítez and attended masterclasses with, amongst others, Roberto Aussel and Abel Carlevaro. As well as being a performing musician, he is also active as a composer. In 2000, he became the first foreigner to be awarded honorary membership of the Classic Guitar Club at California State University, Fullerton.

Karin Jochems-Basting studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts under Abbie de Quant and attended masterclasses with renowned flautists such as Aurèle Nicolet, William Bennett and Peter-Lukas Graf. As well as her concert career, she works as a flute teacher and is a member of the ART Ensemble.

The collaboration between Karin and Adriaan has resulted in, amongst other things, the CDs *Encuentro*, *Impresiones* and *Cambios*. Their music is characterised by personal stories, lyrical melodies and influences from various musical traditions. A fourth album is currently in the works.
