With BRADA, theatre collective LUSU takes you back to Suriname's turbulent 1970s and 1980s, a time full of hope, militancy and independence. Investigative journalist and artistic director Dewi Kasmo based the performance on her own family history and highlights the resistance of five 'brada's' - brothers - and a young love couple. Together they fight against centuries of colonial injustice, but are confronted with the harsh reality: do you keep fighting in Suriname or seek a new life elsewhere? Their brotherhood is put to the test when choices about freedom and future present themselves.

BRADA is a sensitive, intense mix of self-composed music, contemporary dance with Javanese influences and a generous helping of Surinamese humour. What begins as an intimate family portrait unfolds as a loving ode to a generation that struggled with trauma, emancipation and the legacy of colonialism.
