Classical music from the eighteenth century with forays into African jazz. The trio of James Oesi on double bass, Mike Fentross on theorbo and jazz bassist Mark Haanstra, plays arrangements of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi as well as music by South African jazz musician Abdullah Ibrahim.

The James Oesi Trio presents an enchanting mix of solo double bass, theorbo and bass guitar. Together with talented musicians Mike Fentross and Mark Haanstra, James Oesi tonight takes us on a captivating journey to the 18th century, with surprising forays into South African jazz from the 1980s and 1990s.

The programme includes beautiful and well-known works by grandmasters such as Handel, Bach, Vivaldi and Abdullah Ibrahim, but in a new guise. These masterpieces have been specially arranged for the trio by James Oesi, making for a fresh and unique interpretation.

De Standaard wrote about the trio's concert at Gent Festival: "James Oesi Trio, the ensemble around the high-profile double bass player, also captivates with a mix of tradition and innovation. James Oesi

James Oesi is a leading international double bassist known for his virtuosity and broad musical vision. He has performed on prominent stages and festivals worldwide and is committed to promoting the double bass as a solo instrument.

Mike Fentross

Mike Fentross is a renowned Dutch lutenist and conductor, specialising in Baroque music and historical performance practices. He has collaborated with leading ensembles and musicians worldwide and won the Willem Breuker Prize. Fentross founded the ensemble La Sfera Armoniosa, with which he focuses on performing lesser-known baroque works.

Mark Haanstra

Mark Haanstra is a renowned jazz bassist who has worked with Yuri Honing and classical ensembles, among others. He is also a soloist in Steve Mackey's Grammy Award-winning work "Dreamhouse."
