Absurd, surrealist-tinged comedy from Canadian director Matthew Rankin (The Twentieth Century) connects contemporary Winnipeg, Canada, with the Tehran of the 1990s. Wes Anderson meets Abbas Kiarostami in Rankin's ode to Iranian cinema, which artfully intertwines dream and reality.
Introverted civil servant Matthew (Matthew Rankins) leaves Montreal to visit his ailing mother in Winnipeg. Will he even arrive in the city that is his birthplace? Because once there, everyone in the isolated Canadian metropolis turns out to speak Farsi. Matthew himself gets caught up in two children's search for glasses, meanwhile guide Massoud leads a flock of bewildered tourists past the monuments and historical sites of the city of 'Winnipeg'.
Universal Language had its world premiere in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs section of the Cannes Film Festival and was also the Canadian submission for the Oscars (shortlisted).
