Agatha's Almanac

Director Amalie Atkins, Agatha's niece, filmed her aunt for six years on her remote family farm in Manitoba, Canada. On 16 mm, with a cinematic eye for every beautiful, funny detail. Gradually you are drawn into her almost meditative rhythm of sowing, harvesting, pickling and eating. And mending, with duct tape - lots of duct tape.

Among all the greenery, Agatha talks about her life with disarming sobriety. About the quilts she makes, her ingenuity and the choices that shaped her. About how some seeds have lasted for generations and form a tangible connection with the ancestors who worked this land before her. More sensitive topics also come up. But though life is not always easy, for Agatha life is a privilege.

Amalie lets her aunt shine in all her fragile strength. Agatha's imperturbability is enviable, her down-to-earth outlook on life often particularly funny, and the world she has built around her is rich and sparkling in colour and texture.
