Via Musica: Liszt & Chopin reimagined
This programme explores the intersections between music and design: composing as sketching, structuring as building, and improvising as redrawing. Just as an architect or draughtsman works with lines, shapes and proportions, so composers construct their music using rhythm, melody, harmony and form.
This programme centres on works by Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin. In their compositions, one can hear how musical ideas are carefully constructed and developed, from rough sketches to their final form. Their music can be listened to as a sonic sketch, in which outline, detail and expression are closely intertwined.
The StarkLinnemann Trio places these works in a new context by approaching them from both a classical and a jazz perspective. In doing so, it becomes clear how musical elements can be transformed, expanded and reinterpreted, much like reworking a sketch at the drawing board.
