‘Meerkind’ is a musical family show for everyone aged 5 and over.
Jule is growing up in a village on the edge of a large lake. She wants to be bigger, to go further, to have more. When she hears about the horizon and the sea beyond it, she decides to set off on an adventure.
Together with actress Julia van der Vlugt and the musicians of the Hexagon Ensemble, the audience is taken on a musical journey full of imagination, humour and relatable moments.

The performance is inspired by the famous incidental music Edvard Grieg composed for Peer Gynt. The distinctive music — lyrical, colourful and full of dramatic contrasts — drives the story forward. Gijs Philip van Schaik has created new arrangements especially for this performance, tailored to the Hexagon Ensemble’s line-up.

By interweaving music, text and acting, a form of small-scale musical theatre is created in which the musicians not only perform, but also become part of the story.
An adventure for young and old
During her journey, Jule meets all sorts of wondrous characters, portrayed by the ensemble’s musicians. She keeps searching for something that always seems to be just a little further away: the horizon.
But as the story unfolds, she discovers that bigger and further afield doesn’t always mean better. Sometimes, the most important things are closer than you think. Meerkind is a heart-warming and poetic performance about curiosity, adventure and coming home.
